You can find us over at 1 James Hickey Sarani, though most people just call it Dacres Lane. We are right in the Esplanade area, which is always humming with people looking for food or heading to work. Our shop is where we deal with all kinds of cooling stuff. It’s mostly old fridges and spare parts lying around on the shelves. You might see a compressor sitting by the door or some copper pipes coiled up in the corner. It’s a bit cramped in here because we have so many tools and pieces from different machines. When the weather gets really hot in Kolkata, that’s when everyone starts coming in because their fridge stopped working. We spend a lot of time cleaning out dusty coils and checking for leaks. Sometimes we have to wait a few days for a specific part to arrive from the warehouse. My clothes usually have a bit of grease on them by lunchtime. We don't have a big sign out front, just the name and the work we do. Dacres Lane is famous for the street food, so the smell of cooking is always drifting into the shop while we work on the motors. It’s an old building with high ceilings and thick walls that keep it a bit cooler than the street outside. We just keep our heads down and get the repairs done so people can keep their food cold.
