Down in Regent Park, at number 114, you’ll find us working with spices. It’s a regular neighborhood, not a big industrial zone. Jdjk Spices Llp is basically just a group of us who know our way around different peppers, seeds, and powders. The air inside our place always smells like cumin or turmeric, which stays on your clothes long after you leave. We spend a lot of time checking the bags and making sure the labels are straight, though sometimes they aren't. It’s a lot of manual work. We aren't trying to be the biggest company in West Bengal, we just want to get the orders out to people who need them. Most days involve a lot of lifting and moving boxes around the small space we have. The floors get dusty because of the grinding, but we sweep up every evening. It is hard work and our hands usually end up stained yellow or red by lunch. We don't have a marketing team or anything like that. We just have the spices and the scales. We’ve stayed in this part of Kolkata because it’s where we feel comfortable. Dealing with the heat while working with chili powder can be tough on the eyes, but it’s part of the job. We just keep our heads down and fill the packets. That’s what we do here at Regent Park, just getting the work done one bag at a time.
