The scent of ground pepper, turmeric, and dried chilies hangs in the air around the building. We handle a lot of bulk spices here. It’s a dusty job, and by the end of the day, everyone usually has a bit of spice powder on their clothes. The building is a standard old Kolkata structure with thick walls and high ceilings. We spend a lot of time weighing out bags and sealing them up for transport. Dhan Debi Khanna Road isn't the widest street, so when the trucks come to load up, it can block things up for a bit. We try to be quick about it. Our workers have been with us for years and they know the spices just by the smell and texture. We don't use much automation; it’s mostly hands-on work. Sometimes the humidity makes the spices clump up, so we have to be careful about how we store everything. It’s a traditional business in many ways. We don’t have a fancy website or a marketing team.
