Out here in Sengunthapuram, specifically on the Second Cross First Street, things have a certain pace that we've all gotten used to. Karur is known for this kind of work, and we are right in the middle of it all. Our building at number 27 is a bit old, with those heavy wooden doors that creak every time you open them in the morning. Inside, the rooms are high-ceilinged but they still get quite stuffy during the long summer months. We have piles of samples and fabric swatches everywhere you look. It’s not the neatest place in the world, but we have our own system for finding things when we need them. The street outside is very narrow, so when a big truck comes to pick up a load, everything else has to stop for a while. We know all the neighbors, and we often stand outside for a quick chat when the power goes out. We do a lot of the work ourselves, from checking the quality of the items to taping up the heavy boxes. It’s physically tiring some days, especially when there’s a big shipment due to go out. We don't have a big staff, just a few of us who have been working together for a long time. We eat our lunch together in the back and talk about our families or the local news. It’s a very local way of doing things. We don't care for fancy office furniture as long as the work gets done and the orders go out.
