We are set up at Shop No 8 in the New Grain Market over in Assandh, which is part of the Karnal district. Being in a grain market means things are very busy during the harvest season. There is dust in the air and a lot of tractors moving around outside our door. The name on the shop says M S Shri Ram Tilak Raj, and we share this space to handle all the local business. The office is basically one big room with some metal cupboards and a long table. We have a couple of computers that we use to keep track of everything. It gets very hot in the summer, so we have a cooler that makes a lot of noise but helps a bit. Most of the people who stop by are farmers or traders who have been coming to this market for years. We know their names and their families. We usually have a pot of tea going in the corner. The walls could use a new coat of paint, but nobody really cares about that as long as the work gets finished. It is a very practical place. We do not have plush chairs or fancy rugs, just hard stools and a lot of work to do. When the market is quiet, we sit outside on the bench and watch the trucks go by. Sometimes the power cuts out and we have to use flashlights to find the ledger books.
