If you’ve ever waited at the WCC Bus Stop in Nagercoil, you’ve probably seen us. It’s a loud spot, with buses pulling in and out all the time and the conductors shouting the names of the next stops. Our clinic is right there, so the windows rattle a bit when the heavy ones go past. It’s a small place, mostly just the chairs and the equipment for the teeth. I spend most of my day looking at people’s mouths and trying to keep them calm. Dental work isn't something people look forward to, so the mood can be a bit tense in the waiting area. We have a few old magazines on the table, but people mostly just look at their phones while they wait for their name to be called. The lighting is that bright white kind that makes everything look very clinical. It’s not a cozy spot, but that’s not really what a dental clinic is for. We deal with a lot of cavities and cleanings, and the occasional tooth that just has to come out. The sink runs a lot and there’s always that specific smell of the stuff we use to clean the tools. It’s a steady rhythm of one person leaving and another sitting down. We don’t have a big sign with fancy lights, just the name on the wall. It’s just work, and we do it until the last bus leaves.
