Nice Maavu Mill

Nice Maavu Mill is located at 22/112 in Pillai Thoppu, which is part of the Muttom Post area down in Kanyakumari. We are quite close to the coast, so you can sometimes feel the salt in the air. This mill is where we spend our days grinding flour and batter for the local families. The machines make a constant humming sound that you get used to after a few days. The floor is usually covered in a thin layer of white powder, and we wear aprons to keep our clothes somewhat clean, though it never really works. People bring their own containers or bags and wait while we process their grain. It’s a very local way of doing things. We don't have any shiny signs or fancy advertisements. Most people just know we are here because their parents or neighbors told them. It’s often hot and humid, so we keep a couple of big fans going all the time. Sometimes the machines need a bit of a kick to start, or we have to spend an hour cleaning the stones, but that’s just part of the job. We’ve been doing this for years, and it’s become a habit more than anything else. We just like being part of the daily routine for the people in Muttom, making sure they have fresh batter for their idlis.
