Ranjit Footwear

Our shop, Ranjit Footwear, is at 8/103 on the Main Road in Arya Nagar. Being on the main road means there is never a quiet moment. There’s always a bus or a rickshaw going past, and the smell of exhaust is just part of the air here. We have a lot of stock, maybe too much for the size of the room. Boxes are piled up in the corners and behind the counter. We mostly sell everyday stuff, things people wear to the market or for school. We don't have any of that corporate training. We just talk to people like they are our neighbors, because most of them are. The floor is concrete and we’ve had the same ceiling fan for twenty years. It squeaks a bit on the highest setting. We spend the afternoon reorganizing the shelves because things get messy when it’s busy. Sometimes we sit on the front step when there aren't many customers, just watching the traffic go by. Arya Nagar is a busy place, and we’ve seen shops come and go, but we’ve stayed right here. It’s not a glamorous job, but it’s steady. We know which brands last the longest on these rough roads. People trust us for that, and we just keep doing what we do every single day. We make sure the shutter is locked tight at night and come back to do it all over again tomorrow. Even when it’s raining hard, we usually have a few people ducking in to stay dry.
