Smart Technologies is tucked away behind the bus stand in Kanhangad, right on the ground floor of the Besto Centre. If you’ve ever been to the bus stand, you know it’s a noisy place with the conductors shouting and the engines idling. We’re close enough to hear all of that, which keeps things from feeling too quiet. Being on the ground floor is handy because people can just walk right in without dealing with stairs or elevators. The office is a bit small, and the lighting is okay, but we mostly rely on the lamps at our desks. We’ve got computers lined up and wires running along the floor that we try not to trip over. Since we’re right behind the main transit hub, we get a lot of people stopping in just to ask for directions or see what we’re up to. We don't mind. It’s just part of being in Kanhangad. There’s a tea shop around the corner that we visit at least three times a day. The desk chairs are a little squeaky, and the walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but it feels like home to us. We just come in, do what needs to be done on the systems, and watch the buses come and go through the front window. It’s a very local way of working, grounded in the reality of the town and the noise of the street.
