If you walk down Namgarh Path in Hatigaon, you’ll find us at House Number 29. The air around here usually smells like coriander or turmeric, depending on what we are grinding that day. Laba Bora Spices & Food Products (Opc) Private Limited is a small operation. It’s tucked into a residential part of Kamrup, so we try not to be too loud with the machinery. The office is just a small room with a couple of chairs and a lot of ledgers. Assam gets very humid, so we have to be careful with how the spices are stored so they don’t get clumped up. We have a small team of local people who know their way around a kitchen. Most of the work is manual—filling bags, sealing them, and labeling. It’s not a high-tech place by any means. There’s a lot of dust from the spices, so we are always cleaning the surfaces. Sometimes the delivery van gets stuck in the narrow lane, and we all have to go out and help the driver navigate. It’s a lot of small-scale coordination. We drink a lot of tea during the breaks. The neighborhood is quiet, and we like it that way. We don’t have a sign out front that glows or anything, just the address and the name on the door. It’s a practical setup for the kind of work we do here, focusing on the basics of food and spices.
