Shree Stones

Working with stone is heavy and dirty work. Out here on Jahmel Road, we have been running Shree Stones for a good number of years. We are right on the main road near Sukhram Nagar, so there is a lot of traffic passing by all the time. People usually stop because they saw a slab of marble or granite they liked while driving to the Radha Krishna Mandir. The sun in Jodhpur is very strong, so the stones get hot to the touch by noon. We spend most of our time moving blocks and cutting them to size for whoever walks in. It isn’t a clean business. There is white dust on everything, including our clothes and the tea cups. We have different kinds of stones from around the region. Some people want them for their floors and others for kitchen tops. We don't do any big advertising. Word of mouth usually brings people from Kabir Nagar or Soorsagar to our gate. Sometimes the cutting machine acts up and we have to spend half the day fixing it. That’s just part of the job. We try to give people what they ask for without any fuss. The yard is a bit disorganized sometimes because we get new loads in before the old ones are gone. It’s just how it goes when you’re dealing with heavy materials like this. We just keep going and hope the rain stays away so we can keep the saw running.
