Navkul Kirana is also located at the Maha Mandir Circle in Jodhpur, right in the thick of things. We focus a lot on the basic cooking ingredients that every household needs. You will see big open sacks of different lentils and grains sitting near the entrance. The smell of raw spices is quite strong when you walk in. I spend a lot of time weighing out portions of rice or sugar for customers who only want a small amount. We use an old scale that has been with us since the beginning. The floor is made of rough stone and it stays relatively cool even when it is roasting outside. We don't really have a lot of pre-packaged fancy goods but we have all the staples like mustard oil and loose tea leaves. The shop doesn't look like much from the outside but we have everything arranged in a way that makes sense to us. Sometimes the neighbors come in just to sit for a minute and get out of the sun. We keep a small clay pot of water in the corner for anyone who is thirsty. It is a quiet kind of work most of the time. We don't bother with much technology here, just a simple notebook to keep track of what we owe the wholesalers. It's a bit old-fashioned but it works for a small place like ours in Jodhpur where people still prefer to see what they are buying.
