Nakora Kirana And General Store is on Pal Road in Jodhpur, right near the Balaji Mandir. You can hear the temple bells from the counter throughout the day. The shop stays busy because of the location. We have a lot of different things on the shelves, from soaps to spices and everything in between. It is a bit of a squeeze when more than three people are inside at once. We spend our time restocking and making sure we haven’t run out of the basics like sugar or salt. The street outside is always noisy with cars and people going to the temple. Sometimes it’s hard to hear what a customer is asking for over the traffic. We don’t have a fancy computer system, we just know where everything is by memory. Most of our day is spent talking to the people from the neighborhood. It’s a simple setup with wooden counters and old glass jars for the loose items. We don’t try to look like those big city stores. This is just a place where you can get what you need without a fuss. On festival days, it gets really crowded and we barely have time to sit down. We just keep going until it's time to pull the shutters down at night. It is a lot of standing around and lifting boxes, but that is just how a general store works in this town.
