Down in Ratanada, our little shop sits right where the street gets busy. It is called Kailas Watch Mobile, and it is basically just me and a whole lot of spare parts. I spend most of my day hunched over a desk with a magnifying glass stuck to my eye. Jodhpur has a way of getting sand into everything, so half the job is just cleaning out the insides of phones and watches. The shelves are packed with those little plastic boxes that hold batteries and different sizes of glass. I do not really have a fancy layout or a waiting lounge. There are just two wooden stools for people to sit on while they wait for me to finish. Ratanada is a good area, lots of regulars who stop by just to chat while I am working. I remember when mobile phones first started coming in; I had to learn everything from scratch because before that, it was just mechanical watches. Now, it is mostly broken screens and charging ports, but I still enjoy the old-school watch stuff more. The light in the shop is not the best, so I rely on a heavy table lamp that gets quite hot. Sometimes the power goes out, and I have to wait for the light to come back so I can see the tiny parts again. It is a simple life here, just fixing things and watching the day go by outside the door.
