Heera Kirana Store

Heera Kirana Store is located inside Dalle Kha Ki Chaki in the Masuria area of Jodhpur. If you know the neighborhood, it is tucked away a bit, but people around here find us easily enough. It is mostly about the basic groceries that every house needs to keep running. We spend the mornings lifting heavy sacks of rice and shifting bags of flour around to make space. Jodhpur gets very hot in the summer, so the stone floor inside the shop feels good under your feet when you come in from the sun. I usually start the day by sweeping the front and checking if we have enough oil and sugar in stock. We don't have any fancy displays or bright lights, just wooden shelves that have seen better days and a counter where we weigh out the dal and spices. It is a quiet kind of work, mostly talking to the same neighbors every day about the price of onions or how the rain is late this year. Sometimes the kids from the nearby houses run in for a single piece of chocolate or a packet of snacks, and that breaks up the day. We keep the account books by hand, scribbling down what comes in and what goes out. It is not a huge operation, just a local kirana shop trying to keep the shelves filled with the things people actually use in their kitchens every day. I try to make sure everything is clean, though the desert wind always brings in a bit of sand.
