Devi Public School

Out here in Kandha Village, life moves a little slower than it does in the bigger towns. Devi Public School is situated right in the middle of it all, not far from Koch Gao and Warisaliganj. It’s a rural spot, surrounded by fields and narrow dirt roads that get a bit tricky when the monsoon hits. I usually get here early to open up the gates and watch the sun come up over the crops. The school building is simple, just stone and paint, and it sits right on the edge of the village. Most of the kids walk in from the neighboring houses, sometimes carrying their bags and a tiffin box. We don't have much in the way of high-tech gear, but we have enough chairs and desks for everyone who shows up. People in Warisaliganj know us mostly by word of mouth because we’ve been here for a while. It’s a noisy place once the lessons start, with voices carrying across the open fields. Sometimes a cow or a goat wanders too close to the porch, and we have to shoo it away so we can keep working. We don't really do big meetings or fancy events here; it’s mostly just sitting down with the children and going through their lessons. The families around Kandha Village are hardworking people, and we try to do right by them by just showing up every day. The work is steady and the days are long, but we just keep going.
