Our yard is located out in Jhotwara. It is a wide-open space where we keep all the piles of sand, gravel, and bricks. Since we deal with building materials, the whole place is usually covered in a layer of dust. We have a small shack that serves as the office where we keep the ledgers and the telephone. It gets very hot out here during the summer months, so we spend as much time as possible under the shade of the tin roof. We have a few trucks that come in and out all day long to pick up supplies for local construction jobs. It is heavy work, and our clothes are always dirty by the time we go home. We have been supplying materials to this part of Jaipur for a long time now. The ground is uneven and can get very muddy when it rains, making it hard for the trucks to move around. We do not have any fancy computers, just some pens and paper to track the loads. Most of the people we deal with are local builders who have been buying from us for years. We keep a big water pot near the door for anyone who is thirsty. It is a simple life centered around the cycles of building and moving heavy stuff. There is always a lot of shouting to be heard over the noise of the engines and the shovels.
