If you go down to the Chandpole Anaj Mandi and look for D-56-57, you’ll find us at Uma Brokers. The Anaj Mandi is a very specific kind of place, especially early in the morning. It’s full of the smell of grain, the sound of people shouting out prices, and trucks trying to navigate the narrow lanes. Our office is right in the middle of all that chaos. It’s a basic space with some benches for people to sit on while we talk through the deals. We don't use a lot of fancy technology here; a lot of the brokering is still done through conversations and a handshake. We’ve got samples of different grains sitting in little bowls on the table so people can see exactly what they are getting. It’s a dusty environment, and your shoes are never quite clean after a day at the Mandi. We’ve been operating out of these units for years and know most of the other traders by name. It’s a tough business sometimes, depending on the harvest and the weather, but we’ve learned to take the good days with the bad. We aren't here to give anyone a polished sales pitch. We just act as the middleman and try to make sure everyone is treated fairly in the market. It’s a tradition that goes back a long way. Some days we just sit and wait for the right price, watching the birds gather around the spilled seeds.
