Suresh Kirana Store & General Store

Suresh Kirana Store has been a part of New Durga Colony here on Ajmer Road for quite some time now. We’re in Sodala, a place where everyone seems to be in a rush but still finds time to stop for bread or some milk. My shop is small, packed with everything from lentils and rice to soap and notebooks. It’s a general store in every sense of the word. I know most of my customers by their first names. I know who likes which brand of tea and who is going to complain about the price of cooking oil this week. We open up early so people can get what they need before they go to work. The shelves are a bit crowded and sometimes you have to reach over something else to get what you want. I don't really mind the clutter. It feels like home to me after all these years. My family helps out when it gets busy in the evenings. We talk about the weather or the local news while I weigh out the spices on the scale. It’s not a supermarket with bright lights and metal carts. It’s just a neighborhood shop where you can buy one single egg or a whole bag of sugar. The floor is worn down from all the feet coming in and out. I like the noise of the colony and the way the sun sets over Ajmer Road.
