Stone Star Company

We are set up on Amer Road, right near the police station. It’s a good spot because everyone knows where the station is. Working with stone is a messy business, so there is always a layer of fine white dust on everything in the shop. We have different kinds of slabs and carvings leaning against the walls. Most of the day is spent listening to the sound of grinders or chisels. It’s loud and you can’t really keep your clothes clean for long. Amer Road is always busy with traffic heading up towards the fort, so there’s a lot of movement outside our door. We don’t really have a showroom; it’s more of a workshop where the actual work happens. People come by to look at the different stones we have in stock. We don’t do any fancy marketing. We just show them what’s available and talk about what they need. It’s practical work. My hands are usually rough from handling the material all day. We have a small corner where we sit down to have tea and talk about the day’s tasks. It isn’t a high-end operation, just a local shop doing what we know how to do. Some days are slow and others we can barely keep up with the orders. That's just how it goes for us here. We keep our tools sharp and our heads down. It’s a tough way to make a living but we are used to it.
