Shyam Nagar Janpath is a busy spot. Our place is at G-2/ B-99-100, which is easy enough to find if you know the area. We have stacks of cardstock everywhere. The smell of ink is the first thing you notice when you walk in. I spend most of my time at the cutting machine or looking over the latest prints. People come in looking for something specific for their weddings or events. We have samples laid out on the table, though they get shuffled around a lot. It’s a bit cramped with all the boxes of envelopes piled up against the wall. I keep a radio on low in the corner just to have some background noise. The floor is concrete and we have to sweep it twice a day because of the tiny paper scraps. Sometimes the printer acts up and we have to spend an hour fixing it. It’s just part of the job. I’ve lived in this city a long time and I like being in this neighborhood. The tea guy knows exactly how much sugar I want without me saying anything. We work through the afternoon heat, usually with the door halfway closed to keep the dust out. It’s not a glamorous life, but it’s ours and we know the trade well enough. We stay open until the orders for the day are finished, however long that takes.
