S K Genral Stores is located right in the middle of Chandpole Bazaar, not very far from the main GPO building. It’s a pretty hectic place to spend the day, but we have grown to like the energy of the market. The shop is packed from the floor to the ceiling with all sorts of different items. Sometimes it takes us a minute or two to find exactly what a person is looking for because we have so much inventory squeezed into these narrow shelves. The floor is made of old stone and it stays surprisingly cool even when the sun is beating down on the street outside. We get a lot of people walking by since the bazaar is always full of shoppers and people looking for a bargain. We keep a small radio on the back shelf, mostly playing old film songs or the afternoon news. It’s a family-run kind of thing, so there is usually one of us sitting behind the counter at all times. The tea guy comes around twice a day with his kettle, and that’s usually when we take a short break to stretch our legs. The morning sun comes through the front door and lights up all the dust motes in the air. It’s not the quietest place to work, with the rickshaws constantly honking and people haggling just a few feet away. We’ve had this spot for a long time and the neighborhood has changed, but we stay the same.
