Ravi Marbles

Down on Tonk Road in the Durgapura Main area, you’ll find Ravi Marbles. It’s a big open space because marble takes up a lot of room. There is always a fine white powder on our shoes and the desks by the end of the day. It’s hard to keep things perfectly clean when you are moving heavy stone around. The traffic on Tonk Road never really stops, so there is a constant hum of engines in the background. We have been here for years, watching the area change and more buildings go up. Working with marble is heavy work and my back usually aches by five o'clock. We don't use any fancy sales talk here. People come in, they look at the slabs, and we tell them what we have. It’s very straightforward. Sometimes the rain makes the yard a bit of a muddy mess, which is a pain to clean up. We have a small desk in the corner where we keep the books and the phone. It’s nothing special to look at, but it gets the job done. I usually bring my lunch from home and eat it sitting on one of the crates. You get used to the noise and the dust after a few weeks. It’s just a regular business where we work hard and go home tired. That’s the way it’s always been for us.
