Hari Om Granite

Our yard is over at H 149/150 in the Industrial Area Shah. It’s a bit out of the way if you aren’t used to this part of Jaipur, but for us, it’s home. Hari Om Granite is mostly about heavy slabs and the sound of cutting machines. It’s dusty work, and our boots are always white from the stone powder. We spend most of the day moving pieces of granite around with the crane or showing people different colors. Every slab is different, some have more veins and some are plain, and we spend a lot of time explaining why two pieces from the same mountain look nothing alike. The sun gets really hot in the afternoon out here in the industrial area, so we take our breaks in the small shade of the office. It’s just a practical business. We don’t have a fancy showroom with air conditioning; what you see in the yard is what you get. We get contractors and homeowners coming by to pick out something for a kitchen or a floor. We just give them the price, tell them how long the loading will take, and that’s it. It is honest work and it keeps us busy from Monday to Saturday. The GPO area is where the paperwork usually goes through, but the real muscle happens right here at the site.
