Janki-Raman Farmer Producer Company Limited is what we call ourselves. We are based in Meerkhedi, Mirjapur. Ashok Kumar Patel is the one who handles the main address, and his family has lived here for a long time. We’re just a bunch of neighbors who decided to pool our resources. Farming can be a lonely job, and it’s even harder when you’re trying to sell your small crop to big buyers. By joining up, we can get a bit more respect in the market. We spend our mornings checking on the water and the soil. In the evenings, we might get together at Ashok’s place to look at the books. It’s not a professional setting. We have kids playing around and dogs barking while we try to figure out the expenses. We use simple English and talk about things like fertilizer prices and rain. We’ve had some tough years where nothing seemed to go right. But having the company helps us stay afloat. We don't have a mission statement or any of that stuff. We just want to keep farming like our fathers did, but maybe with a little more security. It’s not a glamorous life, but we like being our own masters.
