Abrol Rice Mill is tucked away in Village Annian. It’s a quiet enough place until the harvest begins. Then, the whole village seems to wake up with the sound of engines. We’ve been part of this community for years. Our mill isn't the biggest, but we handle our share of the local crop. We know the farmers by name because they’ve been coming to us for a long time. The equipment is older, but it works well enough if you know how to treat it. We spend a lot of time on maintenance during the off-season to make sure nothing breaks in October. When the rice starts arriving, it’s all hands on deck. My cousin and a few neighbors usually help out with the heavy lifting and the bagging. We don’t have a website or anything like that. We just rely on people knowing where we are and what we do. The smell of parboiled rice is always in the air around here. It’s a smell you get used to after a week. We don't have fancy titles; everyone just does what needs doing, whether that’s cleaning the bins or loading the trucks. Sometimes the harvest is late and we have to wait around, other times it’s a mad rush that lasts all night. We just try to keep things steady. It’s a basic operation, run by people who live right here. We're just part of the landscape and we like it that way.
