Verma Kirana Store

Verma Kirana Store is sitting at 56 Sukhliya in Indore. We are not far from Bapat Square, which is a major landmark in this part of the city. The neighborhood is mostly residential, so we see a lot of the same families day after day. Our shop specializes in kirana items, meaning we have large bins of grains, pulses, and spices. The smell of the spices is the first thing you notice when you walk in. It is a bit of an old-fashioned way of doing things, weighing out items on the scale for customers. We have big jute bags sitting on the floor filled with rice and flour. The walls are lined with smaller items like soaps and bottled oils. It gets quite busy in the mornings when everyone is preparing their meals. We don't have any computers or fancy systems, just a pen and a notebook to keep track of things. The floor is concrete and easy to sweep, which we do several times a day. Sometimes the neighbors stop by just to tell us the news or complain about the weather. It feels like we are part of the street itself. We have a small bulb hanging over the entrance that we turn on as soon as it gets dark. It is a steady, quiet life, just making sure the jars stay full and the customers are looked after while the square stays busy.
