Saluja Kirana Stores

Our place, Saluja Kirana Stores, is located at 292, Mahatma Gandhi Rd, near Dhar Road in Indore. The landmark we usually tell people is the Bada Ganpati Mandir because everyone knows it. This is the 452002 part of town. The shop is a simple room filled with stacks of grains and rows of household goods. We spend most of our day behind the counter, weighing out portions of dal or sugar for the neighbors. It is a very busy intersection here in Bada Ganpati. You can hear the horns honking all day long. We have a small radio that plays in the background, but mostly we just listen to the street. The shelves are quite high, so I have to use a wooden stool to reach the stuff at the top. Sometimes the labels on the tins get a bit faded from the sun coming through the front door. We aren't a big supermarket, just a local kirana store where you can get what you need quickly. My hands are usually a bit white from the flour sacks we move around. We don't have any employees, just family helping out when things get hectic in the evenings. We close up when the temple bells start ringing later in the day. It is just a regular way to make a living in this part of Indore.
