Ramzan Mamu Kirana

Our shop is at Shop No 78 in Nandanvan Colony. It is a simple place called Ramzan Mamu Kirana on Guru Gobind Singh Marg. We are quite close to Life Line School here in Indore. Most days start early when I pull up the metal shutter. It makes a loud noise that the neighbors probably don’t like much. The morning is always the busiest time because people are rushing to work or dropping their kids off. We have a lot of stuff packed into these small shelves. There are bags of flour, different kinds of lentils, and those small packets of shampoo that people like. The floor is concrete and it gets a bit dusty because the road outside is always busy. I spend a lot of time just rearranging boxes or cleaning the glass jars where we keep the loose sweets. It isn't a fancy store with bright lights or air conditioning. We just have a couple of fans that hum all day long. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we just sit in the dark for a bit until it comes back. People come in to buy bread or eggs in the morning and maybe some tobacco or snacks in the evening. It’s a very normal routine. We know most of the people who walk through the door by their first names. It is just how it goes here. We keep it honest and just do our work every single day. The neighborhood has changed a lot, but the shop stays the same.
