Modi Kirana Store

Being at Nasia Chouraha means there is always something happening outside. Chhoti Gwaltoli is a crowded area, and the shop is right in the middle of that rush. I’ve been working here for years, and the routine hasn't changed much. The floor is made of old stone that’s worn smooth from all the feet walking in and out. We sell mostly kirana items, things like lentils, rice, and sugar that we weigh out into plastic bags. The weighing scale is an old one but it still works fine. I spend a lot of time tieing knots in those bags. The shelves are wooden and they sag a little in the middle because of the heavy jars. In the summer, the heat in Indore can be quite a lot, so we drink a lot of tea to stay going. We don't have any big signs or bright lights. Most people know we are here just by seeing the bags of grain sitting out front. Sometimes the supply truck comes late and we have to wait around past closing time to unload everything. It’s hard work on the back, lifting those heavy sacks. My hands always smell like spices or soap by the end of the day. We just try to keep the basics in stock so nobody has to go too far to find what they need for dinner. It is a plain place but it gets the job done for the neighborhood.
