Being down in the basement of Makhija Complex means it stays a bit cooler during the hot Indore afternoons. We are right on Bhanwar Kuan Main Road, so there is always a lot of noise from the bikes and cars outside. The best part is being opposite Aarti Sweets. Sometimes the smell of frying samosas or fresh jalebis comes right across the road, and it’s hard not to go over there for a snack. Our shop is small, just enough space for a few chairs and a desk where we look over people’s papers. We deal with finance and consultancy things, which mostly involves a lot of reading through forms and helping people understand their options. It’s not the most exciting work, but it’s important for the folks who come in from Bairathi Colony or near the Tower Square area. The basement stairs can be a little steep, so people have to watch their step. We have a lot of files stacked up because there is always some paperwork to finish. My partner usually handles the phone calls while I talk to whoever walks in. We try to keep the place tidy, but with so many documents, it’s a constant battle. Usually, by the time we close up, the streetlights are on and the main road is even more crowded than when we started in the morning.
