We’re located out on Ukhrul Road in the Sawomdung area of Imphal East. If you’re driving that way, you can’t miss the stacks of bricks by the side of the road. It’s a rugged part of the country, and our work reflects that. We deal with the local soil to make our bricks, and it’s got a specific feel to it. The weather in Imphal East can be unpredictable, so we’re always keeping an eye on the clouds. Our team is small, mostly people from the Sawomdung area who don’t mind getting their hands dirty. We fire the kilns with whatever we can get, and it’s a constant job to keep the temperature right. The trucks that come up the Ukhrul Road are usually in a hurry, so we try to get them in and out without too much fuss. We don’t have a lot of office staff; usually, it’s just one of us with a notebook keeping track of the loads. It’s a dusty, loud environment, but we’ve made a life of it. We see ourselves as just part of the local scenery now. People know that if they need bricks for a new house or a repair, they can just stop by and see what we’ve got cooling. We don’t make any big promises, we just produce the bricks and hope the rain stays away long enough for them to dry properly. It’s hard work but it pays the bills.
