Adimali is a rainy place sometimes, and our shop is right in the middle of it. We have a lot of big sacks filled with spices. It smells like cardamom and black pepper as soon as you walk through the door. My hands usually smell like ginger by the end of a long day. We spend time weighing things out for people who are passing through the Idukki district. Some are tourists on their way to the hills, while others are just locals we know by name. The floors are a bit dusty from the spice dust that settles everywhere. We have a big wooden counter where we do all our work. It is not a fancy supermarket. We just have what we have on the shelves. Sometimes the bags are heavy to move around. We talk about the weather and the price of crops quite a bit with anyone who stops by. That is just how it is in this part of the country. We have a small back room where we keep the extra stock. It is dark and stays cool back there even when it is sunny outside. People ask us where the spices come from, and we tell them about the nearby farms we buy from. We do not have a website or anything like that. We just open the shutters in the morning and close them when it gets dark. The road outside can get very muddy.
