S N Spices Market

Being out here in Idukki on A M Road means we are surrounded by greenery. The air smells like rain and earth most of the time. Our market is where we handle a lot of the local spices. It isn't a modern building. It's a functional space with stone floors and high ceilings. We get bags of cardamom and pepper brought in by the farmers nearby. The scale we use is an old one, but it works just fine. We spend hours sorting through the batches. It’s hard on the back, but it has to be done. Sometimes the mist comes down so thick you can't see the road from the doorway. We have a small desk where we keep the books. It's a bit cluttered with papers and tea cups. There’s always someone dropping by for a chat or to see what the prices are doing. We don't have a website or anything like that. Word of mouth is how we do things. The spices are what matter. They come in fresh and they leave in sacks. It’s a slow pace of life compared to the cities. We like the rhythm of it. The seasons dictate how busy we are. When the harvest hits, we don't sleep much. Most of our tools are ones we've had for decades. They might look old, but they get the spice sorting done better than some of the newer gadgets would.
