Down by Thekkady Lake Road in Kumily, you will find our place. We are right in the heart of the cardamom country. Most of our work involves processing the green pods that come in from the nearby plantations. It is a lot of sorting, drying, and making sure everything looks right before it goes out to the markets. The smell of cardamom is everywhere here; it gets into your clothes and follows you home. We have a lot of space for the drying racks and the machines we use for cleaning. It is a noisy place when everything is running, but we are used to it by now. The lake road gets quite a few visitors, but we are mostly focused on the farmers and the buyers who come in to see the latest batches. We don’t spend much time on fancy office work. Most of the day is spent on the floor, checking the quality of the spice and talking to the people who grow it. Kumily is a busy town for spices, and we are just one part of that whole system. We have been doing this for years and we know the cycle of the seasons and when the best crops are coming in. It is hard work, especially when the weather is humid, but it is what we know how to do best in this part of Kerala. The mountains are a beautiful place to work, even when the rain is coming down hard.
