Our little spot in Asif Nagar is right near the Gandhi Statue which is a landmark everyone knows around here. We are situated at 12-1-829/C and if you look across the street you will see the Mega Hotel. It’s a very busy part of Hyderabad and there is always the smell of food in the air from the hotel nearby. Teaching people to drive in this area is a real test of patience for everyone involved. The roads are narrow in some places and there are always autos and bikes zipping past you. Having been here for a long time now, the sign outside is a bit faded from the sun and the rain. Inside the office there are just a few chairs and a table where we handle all the paperwork. Most of the students are local youngsters or sometimes older people who finally decided they wanted to learn for themselves. A lot of time is spent just talking through the gears and how to handle the clutch without the engine dying in the middle of the road. It happens a lot especially near the statue where the traffic bunches up and people start honking. I usually drink a lot of tea while waiting for the next lesson to start. The Mega Hotel guys sometimes bring over a cup if it's a slow afternoon. No big promises are made here, we just sit with you in the car and make sure you learn the basics properly. It's a living and it keeps us busy from morning until the sun finally goes down.
