Omkar Stores

Omkar Stores has been sitting here in Byron Bazar for quite some time now. Hyderabad is a big city, but our little spot in the Hyderguda-Basheer Bagh area feels like its own small world. We spend most of the day behind the counter, watching people go about their business. Most of what we sell is just the basic stuff households run out of. We get the bread delivery early, and then it’s just one customer after another until we close. The traffic outside can get really loud, but inside we just focus on the list in front of us. It gets dusty being so close to the road, so we spend a lot of time wiping down jars and packets. My brother and I take turns watching the shop so one of us can eat or run errands. We don’t have a computer system or anything, just a notebook where we jot things down if needed. People come in to chat as much as they do to buy stuff. It’s not a big supermarket, so you have to ask if you can’t find something. We try to keep enough stock so nobody leaves empty-handed. It’s a lot of standing and waiting, but that’s how a general store works. We’ve been at this address for years and don’t plan on going anywhere else soon.
