Godavari Steel

Rani Gunj has a certain rhythm to it, and we are right in the thick of it at Distillery Road. Our place at Plot No. 5 2 198 / 4 - A is where we spend all our daylight hours. Godavari Steel has been around this area long enough that the local people know exactly where to find us. The road outside is usually full of rickshaws and delivery vans trying to get past each other. It is a bit cramped inside the shop with all the steel beams and piles of metal stacked up. We don't have much room for a lobby or a waiting area, so people just stand near the entrance and tell us what they are looking for. Working with steel is rough on the hands and the clothes, but that is just part of the deal we made. We keep a ledger on an old wooden desk to track what goes out. The heat in Rani Gunj can be something else in the middle of the year. We have a couple of old fans running, but they mostly just move the warm air around the room. Most of the guys working here have been doing this for years. We aren’t trying to be anything we are not. It is a steel yard, plain and simple. We wake up, open the shutters, and start the day’s work. When the sun sets over Distillery Road, we pack up. (246 words)
