Sweet And Spicy

You can find us at 76/16 on Sri Ramkrishna Lane in the Mandirtala area. The lane is quite narrow, so finding a place for a scooter is always a bit of a headache for people. We have a small kitchen in the back where we make everything ourselves. The name Sweet And Spicy pretty much covers what we do here. Some days the smell of dry chilies is so strong it makes everyone in the alleyway cough. Other days it is all sugar and heavy syrup for the sweets. It is a family-run thing. My sister does most of the preparation work and I handle the actual cooking at the stove. We don't have many tables inside, just two small ones tucked in the corner for anyone who wants to sit. Most people just take their food and go home. The walls are a bit stained from the steam and the smoke over the years. We try to scrub them down on Sundays when the shop is closed. It is a busy neighborhood with a lot of people walking by on their way to the temple nearby. We get a lot of regulars who don't even have to tell us their order anymore. We don't use any of those pre-made spice mixes, everything is done from scratch every morning. It means we have to start very early, usually before the sun is even up. It's a tiring life but we like it.
