Our group is based in the village of Somaspur, right in the Dhaniakhali area of Hooghly. We operate out of Gobinda Bhar’s place. It’s a bit of a drive from the main city, but this is where the heart of the handloom work is anyway. Being in a rural part of West Bengal means things move at a slightly different pace here. We focus on organizing the local developers and producers who spend their time on the looms. Dhaniakhali Handloom Developers Producer Company Limited is really just about the people in this village and the surrounding spots. The office is simple, nothing like those big corporate buildings in Kolkata. We have some ledgers, a few chairs, and usually someone stopping by to discuss the latest batch of fabric. The roads around here can be a bit rough during the monsoon, but we manage. Most of us have lived in the Hooghly district all our lives, so we know the people and the traditions well. We aren’t trying to be something we aren’t. We just want to make sure the handloom work continues and the producers get what they need to keep going. It’s a lot of coordination and talking to neighbors. If you visit, you’ll see it’s a very practical, hands-on setup. We’re proud of our village and the work that comes out of Somaspur. It takes a lot of effort from everyone involved, but we enjoy the process and the community we've built here over the years.
