Living and working near Vill-Harusaru means you get used to a bit of grit. Hari Iron (India) Ltd. is right in the thick of it. The air always has that metallic smell, and there’s a layer of fine dust on almost every surface in the office, no matter how much we clean. Gurgaon has grown up all around us, but this little pocket still feels like the old village days sometimes. We have heavy trucks coming in and out, loaded down with iron rods and sheets. The sound of metal hitting metal is basically our background music. It’s a physical kind of business, so none of us are really wearing suits or looking very polished. We wear sturdy clothes and boots because the yard can get messy, especially during the monsoon when the ground turns to thick mud. The office is just a couple of rooms with some old metal cabinets and a few chairs that have seen better days. We spend the day checking weights, talking to the loaders, and making sure the orders are ready for the morning. It’s honest work and it keeps us busy from dawn till dusk. Sometimes we sit outside on plastic chairs during lunch to get some air, even if it’s just more Gurgaon heat. It’s not a glamorous setup, but it is what we have known for years.
