Vaishnav Rice Mill

If you go behind PK School to HIG 69, you’ll find us. Being right behind a school means our days are timed by the sound of bells and kids shouting during their breaks. It is a bit of an unusual spot for a rice mill, but we’ve made it work for a long time. The mill itself is a sturdy building where we spend most of our waking hours. Inside, it’s all about the rice. We have the cleaners, the hullers, and the grading machines all squeezed in. It gets pretty loud when everything is running at once. We usually have a few guys out front helping with the loading onto the small trucks that can fit through the lanes here. The space is a bit tight, so we have to be organized with how we stack the bags. We don't have a lot of bells and whistles. Our office is just a small room with a window looking out onto the loading area. It’s a lot of manual work, checking the quality of the grain by hand and making sure the machines don't overheat in the summer. We get a lot of dust on everything, including our ledgers. It’s a simple business, really. We just process what comes in and send it out to the local markets. Sometimes the school kids peek through the gate to see what all the noise is about.
