Sri Lakshmi Krishna Rice Depo

Sri Lakshmi Krishna Rice Depo is at 6-253-3 on M G Road. This is a very central part of town, so the foot traffic never really lets up from morning until night. Our shop is quite narrow, but it goes back a long way. We have stacks of rice bags lined up along both walls, leaving just enough room for people to walk through the middle. We use old-fashioned manual scales with metal weights that have been rubbed smooth by years of use. There is something satisfying about the clink of the weights as we measure out exactly what someone asked for. The ceiling is high, which is good because it stays a bit cooler inside than on the sidewalk. We have a few light bulbs hanging from wires that give off a warm, yellow glow in the evenings. Most of our customers are people we have known for ten or twenty years, so we spend a lot of time asking about their families while we bag their rice. It’s a lot of physical work, especially when a new shipment arrives and we have to stack everything by hand. We don't have any computers or fancy management systems; we just keep it all in our heads and in our little blue books. It is a slow and steady way to make a living, right in the middle of the M G Road hustle. We stay open late most nights because that is when it finally cools down.
