Jagan Mohan Rice Mill

Working at Jagan Mohan Rice Mill means starting early before the sun gets too high. We are located over at 5/66/80 in Cobald Pet, and you can usually hear the engines from down the road. It’s a lot of manual labor, lifting the heavy sacks and making sure the hoppers are full. The air always has that specific smell of raw grain and old machinery. We don't have a big team, just a few of us who know how the old equipment likes to run. Sometimes the belts slip and we have to stop everything to adjust them, which can be a real pain during a busy week. Cobald Pet is a busy area, but once you’re inside the mill, it feels like its own world of noise and vibrating floors. We keep the paperwork in a small wooden drawer that sticks in the rainy season. It’s not the cleanest job, as the rice husks get into everything, even your hair. We just focus on getting through the pile of bags waiting by the door. Some days the heat under the tin roof is almost too much, but we keep some cold water in the corner. We’ve had the same neighbors for years and they don’t seem to mind the racket we make. The truck drivers usually share a bit of gossip while they wait for their loads. It’s just how things go here day after day without much change.
