If you walk down towards Bhatia More in Daulatpura, you will find us at Shop No 523. It is not a big place, just enough room for the chairs and a few people waiting their turn. The mirrors have some chips around the edges and the floor always has a bit of hair on it no matter how much we sweep. That’s the way a barber shop is supposed to be, I think. We have the radio playing most of the time, usually some old songs that everyone knows the words to. The clippers make that steady humming noise all day long. Abrar Hair Dresser is where people come when they need a trim before a wedding or just because they can’t see past their fringe anymore. We use the same blue spray bottles we’ve had for years. Sometimes the neighborhood kids run past the door and make a lot of noise, but it’s a lively area. We don’t have fancy leather seats or expensive lights, just plain wooden ones and some bright bulbs so we can see what we are doing. In the summer, the small wall fan is our best friend. People talk about the cricket scores or the price of vegetables while they sit in the chair. It is just a normal shop doing normal work for the people around here. We know most of the faces that come through the door.
