Mahender General Store

Mahender General Store is tucked right into the Kithwari chowk area of Shekhpura in Palwal. The shop stays quite busy because of all the people passing through the junction throughout the day. We keep the shelves packed with everything from small packets of biscuits to big bags of flour and pulses. It can be hard to find things sometimes if you don't know where to look, but we know exactly where every single jar of spices is kept. The morning time is always the most hectic because everyone is coming in to get their milk and tea leaves before starting their jobs. We have a small counter where we stand most of the day, handing out change and packing items into small bags. The noise from the chowk outside is constant, with rickshaws and bikes always zooming past the front door. We don't have any air conditioning, so the ceiling fan just spins all day to keep the air moving. Some of the older men from Shekhpura come by just to chat for a few minutes while they buy their tobacco or soap. It is a local place where everyone seems to know each other's names. We spend our evenings checking the stock and writing down what we need to order for the next morning. It is a lot of standing on your feet and dealing with a lot of different people, but it is just the way the store has always been run. We try to keep things organized but it gets messy when deliveries arrive.
