You’ll find us on Umpling Road, right in the Nongthymmai area of Shillong. Most people just call it the Dum Dum area. It’s a busy stretch of road, especially in the mornings when everyone is heading to work or school. We have a decent-sized building here that’s seen a lot of students come and go over the years. The steps are a bit worn down in the middle from all the feet walking up them every day. We have classrooms spread out across the floors, and the windows look out over the neighborhood. You can hear the traffic and the local vendors calling out from the street below while classes are going on. It’s not a quiet place, but it feels alive. We have a small area where the kids can gather for their morning assembly before the day really gets moving. The walls inside are painted a pale color, and we try to keep things tidy, though with so many kids around, there’s always a stray pencil or a scrap of paper on the floor somewhere. During the winter months, everyone comes wrapped up in heavy sweaters because the mountain air gets right into the bones. We don't have central heating, so we just huddle in and get on with the work. It’s a local school for local families, and many of the parents went here themselves back in the day.
