Sri Suraya Kanya Rice Mill

If you take a drive down Yeditha Road, you will see the mill. It’s the Sri Suraya Kanya Rice Mill, and it has been standing there for quite some time. The main thing you notice is the dust in the air and the constant hum of the machines. It is a loud place to work, but you get used to it after a few weeks. We spend most of our time moving heavy bags of rice around. It is not the kind of job for someone who wants to sit in an air-conditioned office all day. The floor is usually covered in a thin layer of husk. We don't have any fancy brochures or a website that looks polished. We just do the milling. The roof is corrugated metal, so when it rains, you can barely hear yourself think inside. During the harvest season, the trucks are lined up all the way down the road waiting to drop off their loads. It gets hectic and we all end up pretty tired by the end of the shift. We just focus on getting the rice processed right so it can be sent out. There isn't much else to it. It’s a basic operation on Yeditha Road. We know the farmers around here and they know us. We just keep the machines running and try to stay on top of the work.
