This is the L I C office over in Nand Nagri, specifically at D 2 412. It’s right in the middle of everything in Delhi 110093. If you live around here, you know how busy these streets get. Our office is small, tucked into the block. We have a few chairs for people to sit on while we look through their policy papers. It’s nothing like the big headquarters. It’s just us helping out the local folks with their insurance stuff. Sometimes the power goes out and we just sit and talk until it comes back on. We have piles of forms that people need to fill out, and the pens are always running out of ink. It’s a bit cramped when three or four people come in at once. We know many of the families around here because they’ve been with us for years. They stop by just to say hello or to ask a quick question about a payment. It’s a lot of manual work, writing things down in ledgers and making sure the names are spelled right. The ceiling fan makes a bit of a clicking noise, but we’re used to it by now. We try to keep things simple. No one here is wearing a suit or anything. We just wear our regular clothes and get through the day’s list of tasks. It’s a steady rhythm that keeps the place going.
