Birsha Brick

If you ever find yourself at the Jarmundi bus stand, you are actually very close to where we work. We are in Taljhari Village, right near the Jarmundi post office. It is a busy little area because of the buses coming in and people walking to the post office all day. We make bricks at Birsha Brick. It is a lot of mud and fire and waiting for things to dry. The smoke from the kiln goes up and you can see it from quite a distance away. We have a good crew of guys from the village who know the work well. It is not an easy job, especially when the sun is beating down on the yard, but we get it done. The bus stand means there is always noise and people walking around, which keeps things interesting. Sometimes travelers stop by just to ask for directions or a cup of water. We have been in Jarmundi Block for quite some time now. My uncle actually started the first kiln here and we just stayed on this piece of land. We do not have much of an office, just a small room with a fan where we keep the records. The bricks are stacked high all over the yard in long rows. Sometimes when the wind blows right, you can smell the fresh earth. We do not do anything fancy here, just make the bricks and hope for good weather.
